India the largest milk producer in the world offers immense opportunities for dairy professionals across the nation. With a vision to achieve self-sufficiency in dairy sector, our state portrays a favourable scenario for the dairy aspirant’s in the fields of production, processing and marketing of milk and milk products. Milk being an indispensable part of human diet,devising suitable techniques for the deliverance of quality assured dairy products requires competent dairy technologists in every processing unit. Comprehending this unceasing necessity for skilled personnel in this arena, the Dairy Technology programme has been designed accordingly to generate graduates proficient enough to address the rising concerns pertaining to various aspects involved in the dairy industry.
College of Dairy Science and Technology,Pookodeestablished in 2015 is located in Kerala veterinary and animal sciences university headquarters campus at Pookode Wayanad. The pristine landscape and cool climate makes Wayanad one of the most ideal places for dairying in the state. The district is also popular for implementation of contemporary methods pertaining to dairy farming. Being situated in such supportive location; this institution guarantees both field and industrial levels of exposure to the students.
Admission
The candidates are selected through the Common Engineering Entrance Examination conducted by Government of Kerala. The candidates who have passed the qualifying Higher Secondary Examination, Kerala or examinations recognized as equivalent thereto, with 50% marks in Mathematics separately, and 50% marks in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry put together are eligible for admission.
Course curriculum
The curriculum of B.Tech Dairy Technology programmecomprises of 8 semesters and includes various courses of Dairy Technology, Dairy Chemistry, Dairy Engineering, Dairy Microbiology, Dairy Husbandry and Dairy Business Management. The syllabus which is suitably contrived unquestionably ensures the provision of most recent scientific knowledge, technical skill and expertise to the students. The last to semesters entirely set apart for trainings facilitate to impart practical know how and develop the entrepreneurial skills among the candidates. The hands on training cum experiential learning programme scheduled in the seventh semester encourage the students to try out innovative approaches to develop and market value added dairy products. Getting acquainted with the changing trends and technological advancement inspires them to be a job provider rather than a job seeker. Farm training for 35 days included in the 8th semester intends to familiarize the candidates with the modern and high tech farming methodologies being adopted lately. Plant training for 70 days also included in the final semester equips the students with a sound knowledge in the advanced processing techniques followed in various dairy plants like AMUL, Mother dairy, Schreiber Dynamix, hatsun, milma etc. In addition the course curriculum also incorporates industrial visits for various subjects, an all kerala study tour as well as an all india study tour which adequately provides a nationwide exposure of the dairy sector to the students.
The campus
College of Dairy Science and Technology is located in Pookode, Wayanad district which is at a distance of around 61 kms from Kozhikode city. The nearest towns are Vythiri, Chundale and Kalpetta. The serenity of the westernGhats and the chilly air makes it a comfortable place to stay and a popular tourist destination all around the year.
Co-curricular activities
The institute provides ample scope for the overall development of its students. The college has actively hosted as well as participated in various events like seminars, arts fests, sports meet, exhibitions quiz, debates etc. Though few in numbers our students have successfully won numerous state level and national level laurels. The institute also enthusiastically involves in the extension activities of Dairy Development Department Govt of Kerala and together celebrates world milk day, farmer’s day and assist in various farmer contact programmes. The students union every year celebrates Onam and Christmas in a joyous unprecedented manner. College magazines released by the students union ensures that the vibrant thoughts of the student community could be outreached beyond the campus.
Parent teachers association
The faculty and parents move forward hand in hand catering the essential needs of the students so that effective progress of the institute is brought about. The CDSTPTA plays a vital role in addressing parental concerns and putting into action various productive measures which would ultimately benefit the students.
