16Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University launched the process of implementation of Start up village project at Cherpu, Thrissur. An orientation seminar for 50 entrepreneurs was held at Sopanam auditorium, Cherpu on 15th July 2017.The programme was held in order to create awareness among entrepreneurs about the strategy to be followed for implementing the startup village. While inaugurating the programme, Director of Entrepreneurship, KVASU Dr.T.P.Sethumadhavan suggested that it will be different from the startup village implemented by University at Pullazhi Kole, Thrissur. Cherpu start up will promote value addition, digitalisation and market centred approach while protecting the interests of producers. Entrepreneurs can expect up to 40 percent premium price when compared to the prevalent rate in the market. This system will integrate agriculture, livestock, poultry and fisheries sector and implement good agricultural practices. The products will be marketed as safe to eat products under the label KASAVU. Residue monitoring will be periodically done from instrumentation laboratory of University at Mannuthy. The project envisages for producing milk, meat, chicken, egg, fish, rice and vegetables with less than permissible or zero level of pesticide, antibiotic, heavy metals or chemical residues. The products will be marketed through Startup outlets which will be entirely manned by the entrepreneurs itself. KVASU will facilitate to launch three sales out lets at Cherpu and Thrissur. A separate sales outlet will be proposed to be established at civil station Campus, Ayyanthole, Thrissur. Fodder cultivation, precision farming, productivity enhancement and good management practices will be given importance in the start up project. While delivering the key note address, Dr.B.Sunil, Professor & Head, Meat Technology Unit of KVASU at Mannuthy suggested that University will procure cattle, goat, poultry including ducks and quail from farmers at a premium price and market the products through appropriate value addition programme. Soon university will launch safe to eat Goat meat Chevon in the State. Cherpu startup will facilitate entrepreneurs to increase their income level and will position farming as a viable venture in the district. Moreover consumers will get safe to eat products which are free from pesticides, chemicals and antibiotics.
