Name of the Unit: The University Goat and Sheep Farm,Mannuthy
About :
Origin & History:The Goat Farm was established in 1965 under the Department of Animal Husbandry, Kerala and transferred to Kerala Agricultural University in
1972 and renamed as University Goat and Sheep Farm. This unit was attached to Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University since its inception on May, 2011. Presently, the farm maintains Malabari, Attappady black , Malabari x Alpine/ Sannen crossbreds goats and sheep of Mecheri and Ramanad White breeds. The unit is situated in 4.10 acres of land at Mannuthy Campus, Thrissur district.
Mandate :The mandate of the station is to promote and undertake research on all aspects of goat production and health, act as a repository of elite germplasm of native goat breeds, operate as an instructional farm to students/farmers, capacity building in the area of goat production and function as a centre for technology transfer and validation.

Developed model goat shed for five goats for homestead farming
Designed a goat shed for high rain fall area to accommodate 25 goats with provision for easy urine and dung collection.
Formulated neem based medicine for treating orf in goats.
Validated a foot dip mat to prevent foot rot in goats during monsoon
Research activities
PG Research Projects
32 Post graduate projects in the area of Animal Genetics and Breeding, Animal Nutrition,LPM,, Veterinary medicines, Veterinary biochemistry, Veterinary Physiology and Veterinary microbiology had been completed 8 Ph.D research projects in the area of Animal Genetics and Breeding, Animal Reproduction, LPM and , Veterinary Parasitology had been completed.
