03 Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University’s College of Food Technology will start functioning at Thumburmuzhy, Near Chalakkudy, Thrissur on 7th September 2015. Hon’ble Chief Minister of Kerala Sri. Oommen Chandy will inaugurate the college on 7th Sept 2015 at 12 Noon. Chief Minister will also launch 24X7 Veterinary Services of the University namely e Vetconnet. Hon’ble Minister for Culture and Dairying, Govt of Kerala Sri.K.C.Joseph will preside over the function. Sri.Innocent MP will launch the new Dairy products of KVASU and Sri. B.D.Devassy MLA will inaugurate the exhibition and seminar organised for the farmers. Sri. M.V.Sreyamskumar MLA will inaugurate the Experiential learning centre of KVASU. Sri. Sreekumar, President , Thrissur District Panchayat, Local body representatives. Vice Chancellor Dr.B.Ashok, Registrar Dr.Joseph Mathew, Dean Dr.Gireesh Varma, Officers and Local body representatives will speak on the occasion.
College of Food Technology
Food processing industry in India is ranked 5th in terms of production, consumption and export. Annual growth on food industry in the country is 20 percent. It generates more employment opportunities in food processing units situated across the globe. Keeping in view of growing employment generation potential of the food processing sector, Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU) is launching the State’s first College of Food Technology offering 4-year B.Tech programme in Food Technology with an intake capacity of 50 students at its Thumburmuzhy campus, Chalakudy, Thrissur district. Candidates who have completed Class XII examination can secure admission to this course through the Common Engineering Entrance Examination conducted by the Govt. of Kerala. Upon successful completion of the course, the University intends to arrange industry sponsored internships and campus placements for the Food Technology graduates of this institution. The first year classes would begin during the last week of September.
Food Technology is a multidisciplinary field of applied physical sciences which combines science, microbiology, and engineering education for food and related industries. It generates employment opportunities in units handling products of fruits and vegetables, dairy, meat, poultry, fishery, grains, alcoholic drinks, aerated water, soft drinks, spices etc. Food Technologists are in demand in the sectors such as grain mills, bakery units, confectionery industry, fruits & vegetables pack houses, canning factories, beverages industries, dehydration industries, frozen foods units, soft drinks factories, packaging industries, distilleries & wineries, dairy industry, equipment manufacturers, R & D centres, regulatory organizations, academic institutions, government departments & ministries, and others. The curriculum is designed in such a way that students would get exposure to the entire gamut of operations taking place in professionally managed food processing units, so that they acquire the required skills set and confidence to work as highly motivated professionals.
E Vetconnect
Taking in to consideration the need of Veterinary Care, Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University developed a unique model for Veterinary connectivity across the State namely KVASU e Vet Connect using ICT applications which can be extended to the country in future. KVASU e Vet connect include Vet Connect software for KVASU hospitals, e Vet connect centres, Mobile Veterinary services with mobile tracking system, advisory call centres and CRM, e Vet connect knowledge portal, Vetipedia and disease information System. KVASU e Vet Connect will provide 24X7 Service for the livestock owners, pet owners and other stake holders. Moreover it will help to facilitate employment avenues for KVASU’s Veterinary graduates and diploma holders. Initially it has been suggested to establish e Vet Connect services at three assembly constituencies level@ Ollur, Thrissur and Kalpetta. Keltron has already prepared software for the University.
e Vet Connect System has Vet Connect software for KVASU hospitals, e Vet connect centres, Mobile Veterinary services with mobile tracking system, advisory call centres, e Vet connect knowledge portal, Vetipedia and disease information System. This project can be extended to 53 Blocks across the State where mobile Veterinary services are available. Through linking e Vet connect farmers will get the Veterinary services at their door steps and call centre facilities. e vetconnect will be linked with 25 Entrepreneurship centres of MRCMPU and Dairy Co-operatives in the State for the benefit of Dairy farmers.
Experiential learning centre
The Centre for Experiential Learning built adjacent to the University Dairy Plant, Mannuthy with the financial assistance of I.C.A.R and Government of Kerala shall be used as a centre for taking up the Experiential Learning Programme of Final Year B.Tech (Dairy Science & Technology) students under the Faculty in the pattern stipulated by I.C.A.R. The unit is proposed to be run exclusively by the students for the “Hands on training and Experiential Learning” course in their B.Tech curriculum. Such an orientation will help the students to gain more practical experience in the management of a milk processing plant and also to instil entrepreneurship qualities among themselves. This shall also be used for providing practical training to dairy personnel and entrepreneurs in dairy/food value addition. It shall act as a hub for product development and research. External funded research projects for International/ National/Local agencies/brands/students can be taken up and through the same, the facilities of the plant can be improved along with research reputation.
Exhibition and Seminar
As part of the inaugural function an exhibition of food products and a farmer’s awareness seminar will also be held at Thumburmuzhy.
