Awareness seminar and life skills trainings are in progress at Tribal Residential schools in Wayanad. 150 students studying of Tenth, Eleventh and Twelfth classes of Govt. Model Residential School for Girls, Kaniampatta and secondary school students of Ekalavya Model Residential School Pookode participated in training programmes. The programme was arranged for tribal school children of the selected schools in Wayanad district as part of the state plan funded three year project on tribal development of Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University.
Aadivasi means ‘earliest inheritant’ and not a term for backward caste or community said Dr. (Prof.) K. Sivarajan, Dean, Faculty of Education, Calicut University while dealing with a session on importance of education and tribal culture. The programme brought a new insight to the little minds of the now considered most backward section. Life skill trainings were held in different sessions for students divided in groups. Social skills training, effective communication and interpersonal relationship, leadership, problem solving and decision making skills self awareness, coping with stress were the sessions handled by recourse persons from Centre for life skills learning, Palakkad. The participants were divided with breakaway sessions which were an enlightening experience with games and activities. Dr. Sr. Betty of Child Welfare Centre educated the students on health, nutrition and personal hygiene. Shri. Stanney, Headmaster welcomed the gathering. Dr. Vidya P & Soja K S of Directorate of Entrepreneurship co-ordinated the programme.
Technology, Pedagogy and Content are important for teachers
Recently the role of teachers are getting redefined as mentors rather than helpers or facilitators; Says Dr.K.Sivarajan, Dean, Faculty of Education, University of Calicut. Dr.Sivarajan made this remark while delivering key note address during the training programme for teachers and Students at Ekalavya Model Residential School, Pookode on 18th September 2015 as part of KVASU’s Wayanad 2030. Technology, Pedagogy and Content are important for teachers. We are living in an era of Knowledge construction Dr.Sivarajan added. Director of Entrepreneurship of Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University Dr.T.P.Sethumadhavan inaugurated the training programme.
Kerala veterinary and Animal Sciences University charted out a series of programmes for students as part of Wayanad 2030 focusing in the area of Tribal Development. In the initial phase colonies like Boothanam (Kattunaikka community) in Pozhuthana Panchayat and Chembatty tribal colony (Paniya community) of Vythiri Panchayat were selected through direct interview and Participatory Rural Appraisal using tools like venn diagram, social mapping, resource mapping and seasonal calendar were used in developing the need based package of inputs to the colonies.
The schools Ekalavya Model Residential School Pookode and Govt. Model Residential School Kaniambetta are identified for the training programmes. Awareness programmes and trainings are arranged in the two selected schools in the areas of health and nutrition, child rights , Forest Right Act , Tribe Laws and Regulations, Services, Ill effects of alcoholism and drug abuse for the students. A separate training programme on ‘Making of good teachers ‘arranged for the teachers of the tribal schools. Moreover training will cover Social Skills trainings, Life skill trainings, Classes on POSCO Act, sexual violence and alcoholism ill effects, effective learning, goal setting, coping with stress, personality development and awareness on current environmental problems. Experts from Kerala Veterinary & Animal Sciences University, Child Welfare Committee, KIRTADS and Centre for Life Skills Learning Palakkad are handling various sessions. Dr.Vidya and Miss. Soja from KVASU attended the programme.
WAYANAD 2030- TRIBAL DEVELOPMENT PROJECT OF KVASU SET TO MAKE THE FIRST MOVE
Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University started the implementation of Wayanad 2030 project conceptualized during the prospective plan workshop during 2012. It is aimed at Livelihood enhancement of Wayanad tribal colonies through need based package of inputs. The objectives include Achieving food security, economic security and nutritional security among tribal population, facilitate strategies for increasing gross enrolment ratio among students in higher education sector; improving communication skills, problem based learning, teachers’ training programme, educational and career counselling, maintenance of public health etc. and Socio-educational development through teachers’ training programmes, educational awareness programmes for parents, training and visit of research institutes.Wayanad 2030 launched at Chundale with the awareness seminar and free Animal Health Camp at Chundale, Wayanad on 14th September 2015.
Directorate of Entrepreneurship is implementing the programme which proposes need-based package of inputs to selected tribal colonies and tribal schools and develops a new delivery model for sustainable growth in the sector by utilizing the State Plan Fund 2014-15. Two colonies Boothanam in Pozhuthana Panchayat and Chembatty tribal colony of Vythiri Panchayat which are in proximity to the University are selected based on the data collected. Ekalavya Model Residential School Pookode and Govt. Model Residential School Kaniambetta are are the two schools identified for the project. Awareness programmes will be held in the selected colonies in the areas of Animal husbandry, health and nutrition, problems addressing tribes ,Forest Right Act , Tribe Laws and Regulations, Services, Ill effects of alcoholism and drug abuse and other vocational trainings. Animal health camps will be held at Milk Cooperative societies and ICDP sub centres in the respective Panchayaths. Five camps will be held during third and fourth week of September, in association with Govt. Veterinary Hospitals of Vythiri and Pozhuthana grama Panchayath. Moreover Health camps will be conducted in Boothanam tribal colony and Chembatty tribal colony through Tribal Mobile Unit during the third week of September. Life skills trainings will be held during 19th, 20th and 21st of September for students of the identified tribal schools. Career Guidance seminar will be held in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya and Ekalavya Model Residential School. Career guidance classes for tenth and twelfth standard students of govt. Residential School Kaniambetta will be held on 19th of this month. Moreover Trainings will be conducted for teachers of the selected tribal schools focusing on issues addressing tribal students. Experts from Kerala Veterinary & Animal Sciences University, Child Welfare Committee, KIRTADS and Centre for Life Skills Learning Palakkad will handle different sessions during the training programmes
Waste management issues will be dealt through demonstration classes on vermicomposting and introducing it into the agriculture fields of selected colonies associating with MS Swaminathan Research Foundation Wayanad. Supply of fodder slips, collective farming, and introduction of germplasm of selected agricultural crops will be promoted for women SHG groups of the colonies in consultation with KrishiVigyan Kendra Ambalavayal and MSSRF. Aishwarya Poultry cages of KVASU with birds will be distributed as part of the project, which will provide livelihood support for the families of the selected tribal colonies.
Animal Health Camp held at Vythiri, Wayanad

Animal health camp and awareness seminar on Dairying was held at Vythiri Co-operative Milk Society, Vythiri, Wayanad on 15th September 2015. This programme was organized by Kerala Veterinary and animal Sciences University with the technical support from Animal husbandry Departmentas part of comprehensive Wayanad 2030 plan. 100 livestock farmers and pet owners attended the programme. Dr.T.P.Sethumadhavan, Director of Entrepreneurship, KVASU during the keynote address suggested that Productivity enhancement is the immediate challenge to make dairying sustainable. Helminthiasis, production oriented diseases, contagious diseases, digestive disorders, quality of feeds and fodder and improper management are the impediments which affect productivity. Farmers should consider increasing productivity at the micro level so as to increase milk production. Daily additional increase in one litre milk from each cattle will help to increase milk production by an additional 5 lakh litres in the state. Scientific housing, feeding, management and disease control measures will facilitate this objective. Dr.K.L.Thomas, Senior Veterinary Surgeon, Vythiri hospital, Dr.Vidya and Dr.RatheeshAsst professors from KVASU addressed the farmers. As part of free health camp veterinarians examined the animals and supplied medicines.Selected final year students attended the programme.As part of providing 24X7 Veterinary services, Kalpetta Assembly constituency has been selected for Advisory call centres and E Vetconnect Veterinary emergency services. Farmers can avail this service from 4 PM to 12 PM. Since Foot and Mouth Disease is reported from two Grama panchayats in the Karnataka border areas of Waynad, an awareness programme on Foot and Mouth Disease was also held as part of the awareness seminar at Vythiri.
Education and career guidance programme for tribal school Children held @ Pookode
KVASU devised a novel programme for education and career guidance among tribal students of Wayanad district. In the changing environment students can select courses based on the emerging opportunities in the manufacturing, digital and services sector; Says Dr.T.P.Sethumadhavan, Director of Entrepreneurship of Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University. Sethumadhavan made this remark while taking educational and career guidance classes for the students of Ekalavya Model Residential Tribal School, Pookode on 16th September 2015.This programme was organized as part of Wayanad 2030 the comprehensive development programme for Wayanad with the focus on Tribal development. Student’s interest, aptitude, choice and involvement are the cardinals of selecting the course. In the era where government of India is promoting Make in India, Skills India and Digital India there are enough opportunities for skill development programmes. Selection of the courses cannot be based on the parent’s interest, but purely on student’s interest and aptitude. Of the total number of courses, there are around 9% of professional courses. But students and parents are always focusing on professional courses. Nonprofessional courses create umpteen opportunities in the country since services sector creates 68% additional employment opportunities than primary agriculture and secondary industrial sectors. Economic review 2014-15 revealed that growth in services sector was 10.6% whereas envisaged growth was only 9.6 %.it is very difficult to get admission to B.Com course than Engineering. Management, accounting, analytics, media, advertising, supply chain, ICT deliverables, entrepreneurship, innovation, logistics, retail, agribusiness management, developmental science, hospitality, tourism, food technology, nursing, energy, actuarial science are Information technology some of the emerging sectors which will create more employment opportunities in the coming decade. Banking, Finance, insurance and Analytics will create around 25 lakh employment opportunities by 2020. Startup will create biggest revolution in career in the coming years. In the era of globalization students can explore the opportunities through overseas education.
Registrar of KVASU Dr.Joseph Mathew inaugurated the programme. Implementing officer and Asst Professor, Directorate of Entrepreneurship Dr.Vidya. Research associate Miss.Soja and teachers of Model residential School participated in the programme. During the interaction session students had shown keen interest in medical, engineering, teaching and other services sectors. Some of the students are interested to become IAS and IPS officers. KVASU’s education and career oriented programme has given an overview on horizons of opportunities across the World. University will continue to implement such programmes on a regular basis, Vice Chancellor Dr.B.Ashok told. A separate education and career awareness programme was held for students of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Pookode. As part of Wayanad 2030 teachers of tribal will be given training on the recent concepts in education and career opportunities, VC added.
