Dumping of poultry wastes across the border of States like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are emerging an important waste management issue in the State. Poultry Scientists need to address this issue in a practical manner and everybody should think of One Nation, Says Hon’ble Governor Justice P Sathasivam. Governor made this statement while inaugurating the 32nd Annual Conference of Indian Poultry Science Association and National Symposium on Clean and Green Poultry Production held at College of Avian Sciences and Management, Thiruvazhamkunnu on 19th November 2015. India ranks third in egg production and 4th in Broiler production. This is the fastest growing industry which can create umpteen job opportunities in the Country. Poultry products are the cheapest animal protein sources to address protein malnutrition thus facilitating nutritional security in the country; Governor added. The three day National Symposium is organised by Centre for advanced Studies in Poultry Science and Faculty of Poultry Science of Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University. Governor released the Compendium and book on History of Veterinary medicine namely ‘Saleehothreeyam’ written by Vice Chancellor Dr.B.Ashok and 45 other authors. Moreover Governor gave away the National awards for the outstanding Poultry Scientists including Dr.A.K.K.Unni from Kerala.
During the keynote address Dr.R.Prabakaran, Former Vice Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University and President, Indian Poultry Science Association suggested that Indian Poultry sector contributes 0.5 Percent to National GDP. Annual growth in this sector is 8-12%. By 2020 Chicken consumption will overtake Mutton, Pork and Beef consumption in India. He lauded the activities of KVASU in establishing a separate faculty for poultry Sciences in the State. This is the only institution in India Catering the education, research and Entrepreneurship in Poultry sector. Intensification of poultry production leads to generation of huge amount of wastes. We have to strive to reduce their impact on environment by adapting cost effective technologies for handling and utilizing them and in the process earn more profit. Dr.Prabakaran added.
Sri.M.B.Rajesh .MP presided over the function. Adv.N.Samsudheen, MLA offered felicitations. During the introductory speech Vice Chancellor Dr.B.Ashok explained the research priorities of the University in the Poultry and entrepreneurship sectors in the State.Dr.Leo Joseph, Organising Secretary presented the report and Dr.Jalaludeen, Special Officer, College of Avian Sciences and Management expressed vote of thanks. Around 250 delegates across the State are participating in the three day Symposium.
