KVASU to collaborate with the Netherlands on Natural Dairy farming

                   Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University will collaborate with Natural livestock farming initiatives of the Netherlands and Trans disciplinary University in order to build practical solutions in the area of one health. An MOU will be signed in this regard Says Vice Chancellor Dr.B.Ashok.  The focus will be on natural dairy farming. Across the world antibiotic and antimicrobial residue issues are emerging which results in antibiotic and antimicrobial resistance. Antibiotic resistant organisms affect human and animal health and environment. This issue will be studied under the concept of one health. KVASU has a centre for one health namely COHEART-Centre for One health education advocacy research and training aimed at creating joint action against all issues affecting the co-existence of man, animal and environment. VC added.

               The proposed collaboration between KVASU, Natural livestock farming initiatives of the Netherlands and Tans disciplinary University aims to provide practical solutions which will address increasing use of antibiotics, anti microbial and other chemicals and pesticides in dairying across the world.  The Netherlands Ministry of Health has a Memorandum of Understanding with the Indian Ministry of Health to help reduce antibiotic residue present in animal products such as milk and meat products and antimicrobial resistance. A global platform in the form of a consortium will be developed and pursue academic, research, knowledge transfer and exchange programmes for scientists, veterinarians, farmers, entrepreneurs, industry and women self help groups. This consortium will work in the Netherlands, India and Africa. In India activities will be on community based enterprise development for producing herbal medicines, organic/safe to consume dairy chain development with potential stakeholders and offer prospective courses for the stakeholders. KVASU already launched post graduate diploma programmes in Ethno pharmacology and PGD in One health under technology enabled mode. KVASU’s expertise in these areas will be made use while launching the global one health platform. Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Karnataka Veterinary& Fisheries University, Trans Disciplinary University, National Dairy Development Board and State Milk Unions of South India including milma will work together for this consortium.Inoder to finalise the proposed structure for the consortium “India Donor and Knowledge Holders Meeting was held at Trans Disciplinary University, Bangalore on 12^th December 2015 in which T.P.Sethumadhavan presented a paper on underlying  principle of One heath at KVASU. Wouter Verhey, Agricultural Counsellor, India and Sri Lanka, Embassy of the Kingdom of Netherlands participated in the meeting. An international workshop on Natural Dairy farming will be organised by India platform during 2016.
