24Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU) invites applications online from eligible candidates for its Post graduate, Undergraduate, Diploma and Post Graduate diploma /certificate courses courses in the academic year 2016-17. The University that came into existence on 14th June, 2010 as per Ordinance No. 44/2010 and later Act 3/2011 of the Government of Kerala has been established recognizing the need to advance animal production sector activities. KVASU undertakes academic, research, extension and entrepreneurship activities in animal production and dairy sector and it offers Certificate, Diploma, Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Doctoral degree programmes in Veterinary and Animal Science, Dairy Science and Technology and Poultry Science subjects, in addition to various Technology Enabled Distance Learning Programmes.
Besides the conventional Post graduate programmes in Veterinary & Animal Sciences/Dairy Sciences, taking into consideration the comprehensive development of the Livestock and allied sectors and promotion of entrepreneurial ventures in the livestock sector, the University has initiated academic programmes in diverse subjects of the Veterinary and Dairy sectors. The institution offers M.Sc programmes in (1) Biotechnology (2) Quality Control In Dairy Industry (3) Biostatistics (4) Applied Microbiology (5) Animal Sciences and (6) Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in addition to (7) MS degree in Wild Life Studies.
M.Sc Programmes
M.Sc Biostatistics helps strengthening research in the disciplines of Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Health Sciences and Veterinary Sciences.. The course will enable the students to become biostatisticians, biostatistical programmers, SAS programmers, consultants and researchers in industry, hospitals, public health labs, planning and research department etc. The course in Quality control in Dairy Industry will equip the students in Dairy Products and Processing Quality and open up opportunities to undertake career in quality management of food products on a global scale. It is designed to generate qualified professionals to handle the emerging needs in quality control sector in Dairy Industry.
MS Wildlife Studies is for bioscience graduates who would like to turn towards wildlife conservation and management. It aims to equip bioscience graduates to qualify to work in wildlife sectors associated with zoos, NGOs etc. as wildlife biologists. They can take up further studies in national and international institutes of importance.
In the present scenario, microbiology is acquiring great importance in the context of its applications in food safety, fermentation technology, molecular biology, industrial biotechnology, biocontrol of pests and sewage/waste management. Therefore, applied microbiology is an important area with a co-ordinated approach and a student mastering M.Sc Applied Microbiology will therefore be able to do independent research by availing meritorious scholarships or become a professional specialist in the above areas.
Students undergoing M.Sc Biochemistry and Molecular Biology will understand the scientific basics of the life processes at the molecular level. The course will further equip the students in the applications to organize biochemical analysis of organs/tissues and open up opportunities to undertake career in teaching, research in diagnostic laboratories.
Due to limitations of trained personnel and research facilities, new scientific developments in biotechnology have not been fully exploited for improvement of livestock health and productivity in our country. As far as M.Sc in Animal Biotechnology is concerned there is a great demand for trained manpower in biotechnology world over and particularly in India. Job opportunities in Laboratories and Research Institutions are worthwhile.
M.Sc Animal Science will help people to develop an understanding of the biology of domestic and captive animals, their care, management and use as a resource for food, fiber, recreation and companionship.The course aims to develop skills in designing projects and its efficient implementation by imparting knowledge on project management, human resource management and business management.
For all M.Sc Courses eligibility is a Degree in Veterinary Sciences/Dairy Sciences/Forestry/ Food Technology/ Microbiology/ Biochemistry/ Chemistry/ Zoology/Botany/Biotechnology while For M.Sc Biostatistics it is a Bachelors degree in Statistics or Mathematics with Statistics as subsidiary subject at higher secondary level.
Graduate Courses
The Graduate course B.Sc. Poultry Production and Business Management (PP&BM) running at the College of Avian Sciences and Management, Thiruvazhamkunnu at Palakkad aims in moulding managerial experts with adequate knowledge in poultry production. Employment opportunities in key areas such as Poultry Production, Feed Mill management, Marketting and Poultry Processing are explorable. It also aims at supporting self-entrepreneurs who can take up their own ventures in poultry business. Eligibilty: Plus two of any stream.
Doctoral Programmes
In addition to the Ph.D. programme in various disciplines in Veterinary and Animal Sciences, KVASU is launching Ph.D. programmes in Biosciences in eight subjects such as in Histology, Developmental Anatomy , Molecular Biology, Clinical Biochemistry, Molecular Genetics , Livestock Products , Diagnostics and Vaccinology and Animal Science. The candidate shall undertake course work for a minimum period of one semester. Persons with successful Post Graduate Degree (Masters Degree in Science subjects) and employed persons from National Laboratories /Institutes/ Universities/ Colleges/ Government//Private Organization can also apply. Another Doctoral Programme is Ph.D in Climate Change In Animal Agriculture which has been launched to train the manpower as a part of capacity building in climate change education, research and extension to meet the national and global demand of resource personnel in this field of specialization of Climate Change and Animal Agriculture for sustenance of food security. Eligibility: M.V.Sc/M.S(Integrated)CCA /Masters in Agriculture Sciences/ Fisheries/ M.Sc Biological Sciences/Physical Sciences etc.
Diploma Courses
The course Diploma in Poultry Production is designed to impart basic theoretical knowledge and reasonable practical experience in all aspects of poultry farming activities.. The Diploma course in Laboratory techniques intends to impart advanced skills to mould practicing laboratory professionals to excel in quality disease diagnosis to serve as an integral part of country’s health care system. (Five seats in BVSc and AH are reserved for diploma holders in Poultry Production and Laboratory Techniques provided they qualify the entrance examination conducted by the CEE, Kerala.) The Diploma course in Dairy Science, intends to promote personals into dairy farm management and to man small dairy processing units. Eligibility: Eligibility: Pass in Plus 2 or VHSE with Biology as one of the subjects for Diploma in Poultry Production and Laboratory Techniques while Pass in Plus two with Biology or VHSC with Livestock Management (Dairy Husbandry) or Dairying (Milk Products) for Dairy Science.(Two seats of B.Tech. (D.Sc.&Tech.) programme are reserved for the diploma holders in Dairy Science provided they qualify the entrance examination conducted by the Commissioner for Entrance Examination, Kerala). Another new course being offered by the University is the Diploma course in Feed Technology which is for achieving technological innovation in animal feed production, providing practical guidelines, training in feed processing and generating specialists in feed manufacturing techniques. The eligibility is plus two /VHSE, Diploma in mechanical/ electrical / software engineering, with ITI as desirable.
Technology enabled distant learning courses
The University offers a variety of PG Diploma and Certificate courses under Distant mode to meet the requirements of candidates based on the changing global scenario and to update and acquire knowledge and expertise in more specific areas like Food safety and security, One health, Therapeutic management of Animal Health, Ethno medicine and Homoeopathy in Veterinary field, Disaster management, Farm Journalism, Integrated farming systems, Dairy and Poultry entrepreneurship, Informatics and Management etc. The eligibility for admission varies with each course. These are one year or six months courses .There will be contact classes as per the discretion of the Course coordinator during the course.
Certificate courses
Short term certificate courses of six months duration are offered at the following centres in the following subjects. The schedule of admission will be notified by the Course Directors concerned at appropriate times. Eligibilty is 7th std with reading and writing knowledge./ SSLC.
