14Kannur, Dec 13, 2011: Kerala State Higher Education Council (KSHEC) Vice-chairman T P Sreenivasan today said the concept of Deemed Universities is good for the education system in India. Inaugurating a three-day national seminar on 'Higher Education in India: Challenges and Prospects,' jointly organised by Kannur University Students Union, Research Centre and Central Library at the University campus here today, Mr Sreenivasan opined that autonomy of the educational institutions would give them more responsibility. He opined that Kerala should produce graduates employable anywhere in the world. Objecting to the profit making in education by private players, he said there should be a control for this. He said Kerala should have a State Assessment and Accreditation Council like the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Noted Economist Dr Prabhat Patnaik, who inaugurated the plenary session of the seminar, said education should not be designed for employability alone, as this would make student a mere product. He said higher education in India was passing through a phase of acute crisis and the present education system was highly commoditised.
