23Government of Kerala is trying to develop Agri based organic culture in the State; Says Adv.V.S.Sunilkumar, Hon’ble Minister for Agriculture and Farmers welfare, Govt of Kerala. Minister made this statement while inaugurating the Graduation ceremony and launching of Sumedha project in Wayanad District at Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University on 21st November 2016. Harithakeralam project of Government envisages conservation of water, soil and natural resources. Veterinary University has to play a key role in conservation of local cattle and promotion of farmer friendly livestock research in the State. Animal husbandry sector is one of the indispensable areas in the Harithakeralam mission project. While talking about the merits of White and Green revolution in the State, we need to have introspection on the impact of this revolution to the genetic resources. At a time when crossbred population in the country is 23 percent, Kerala converted 96 percent of local cattle in to crossbreds. Minister accused the scientific community for the loss of local germplasm in the State. University need to generate more farmer friendly technologies which could be percolated among the farming community. Minister added. Veterinary graduates should work with social commitment to assist the farmers. Government will not allow closure of any institutions in various campuses of KVASU, but will try to launch new emerging courses. As part of recent global agreements like Regional Co-operative Economic Partnership, there are chances of heavy import of A2 milk from developed countries. A2 milk is produced from Indian cattle across the world. Countries like Brazil and Mexico started exporting A2 milk across the World. But Kerala converted 96 percent of local cattle in to crossbreds. Scientists need to do research on this sector. Minister added. While launching the Sumedha educational project for Wayanad district, minister suggested that it will facilitate students to take appropriate decisions on higher education, career and career development. Minister released five ready to eat meat products developed by Meat Technology Unit and Windows the newsletter of KVASU.
Minister distributed certificates to 57 Veterinary Undergraduates, Post graduates and Doctoral students. Best Performer awards were distributed to Dr.A.P.Usha, Dr.C.B.Devanand, Dr.Shibu Simon and P.Sreekumar. Drisya, Laboaratory diploma student bagged gold medal. Dr. Varuna P Panicker, Asst Professor of College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy bagged Best PhD thesis award.
Sr.C.K.Saseendran MLA presided over the function. Sri.O.R.Kelu MLA launched value added products. Smt. Ushakumari, President, District Panchayat, Wayanad, Kalpetta Block Panchayat President Smt. Sakunthala Shanmukhan, Vythiri Grama Panchayat President Smt. V.Ushakumari offered felicitations. Vice Chancellor Sri. Anil Xavier IAS welcomed the delegates and Registrar Dr.Joseph Mathew expressed vote of thanks. As part of Sumedha, Dr.T.P.Sethumadhavan, Director of Entrepreneurship of KVASU took a class on educational and career opportunities. 300 students from Ekalavya tribal residential School and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyala attended the programme among faculty, staff. labourers and students of KVASU.
