25An experiential training programme on ‘Prophylactic hoof care in farm animals’ was conducted at the Department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology,CVAS, Mannuthy from 21st and 22nd April 2017 under the auspices of the Directorate of Clinics, Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences. The inauguration of training was held at the Conference Hall of Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine on 21st April 2017. The training programme was inaugurated by Dr. K. Vijayakumar, Director of Clinics in the meeting presided by Dr. K.Anilkumar, Associate Dean, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy. Dr. K. AnilKumar. Associate Dean, CVAS, Mannuthy released the training manual on prophylactic hoof care. Dr. C.B. Devanand, Professor and Head, Department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology welcomed the gathering and briefed the programme outline Dr. S. Ajithkumar, Professor and Head, TVCC, Mannuthy and Dr. Syam K. Venugopal., Professor and Head, University Veterinary Hospital, Kokkala offered felicitations. Dr. Laiju M Philip, Assistant Professor & Course Director proposed vote of thanks. Six participants from Kerala Livestock Development Board (3), Department of Animal Husbandry (2) and Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (1) attended the training programme. Training provided professional skills in assessing hoof health, early detection of hoof disorders, detection of laminitis, preventive and therapeutic hoof trimming in dairy cattle and goats. The Training Program was integrated with University Livestock Farm and University Goat Farm, Mannuthy for Interactive and hands-on sessions to discuss the diagnostic, and surgical protocols to be adopted for hoof disorders. Sessions were equipped with important topics like basic hoof anatomy, and biomechanics, factors affecting hoof health, claw zones and hoof disorders in farm animals. During the course, the participants acquired basic skills of trimming, anaesthasia and regional intravenous analgesia, treatment of lesions, application of hoof blocks, hoof bandages and foot bath . The sessions were concluded with the valedictory function on 22nd April 2017 at University Livestock Farm, Mannuthy by a meeting presided by Dr. C.B. Devanand, Professor and Head, Dept of. Surgery. Dr. K. P. Sreekumar, Professor (Research Co-ordination and Director, International Co-operation and Initiative) addressed the gathering and distributed certificates to the participants and Dr. Anil.K.S., Professor and Head, University Livestock Farm, Mannuthy delivered the closing remarks. Dr. Laiju M Philip, Course Director welcomed the gathering and Dr.Vaisakh Viswam, Resident, Department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology proposed vote of thanks. In the feedback session participants shared the utility of hands on experience in hoof care and the importance of the training in the present scenario of livestock rearing and assured that the experience gained will be fully utilized to address the issues of hoof disorders in farm animals.
