24 Recently as a sequel to climate change, appropriate projects need to be prepared with climate change perspective,says Dr.D V Deshpande ,Director, Bankers Institute of Rural Development,Lucknow(BIRD).Dr.Deshpande made this remark while presenting a paper on ‘Role of officers with animal husbandry background in changed environment in the three day workshop on impact off climate change on livestock based livelihood systems.
It was organized by NABARD,BIRD and Kerala veterinary and animal sciences university at hotel Garuda,Thrissur. Various funding agencies like green climate fund, National agency for climate funding are available.NABARD is facilitating Govt.of India’s programme to double the farmers income by 2022. Precision farming ,vertical farming and hydroponics are emerging as some of the technologies for facilitating high value agriculture. Compared to previous years, market centered production is acquiring momentum in animal agriculture. Recently the trend is plate to farm instead of farm to fork. NABARD is trying to formulate area specific model projects and to normalize the unit cost for animal husbandry projects. Reduction of greenhouse gases emission, mitigation measures and augmenting livelihood security are some of the priorities in climate change adaptation strategies, Deshpande added.
While delivering the keynote address KVASU Vice Chancellor in charge Dr. Joseph Mathew suggested that farmers’ income need to be doubled in tune with the increasing cost of production. Improving social status, maintaining sustainability and increasing income level of farmers are some of the key areas which need more emphasis, VC added.
While delivering the introductory note remarks, Dr.T.P.Sethumadhavan, Director of Entrepreneurship, KVASU, suggested that 2.5% of growth in animal husbandry sector will favor 1% GDP growth in agriculture. Director of Academics and Research Dr.K.Devada, Director International Cooperation, Dr.K.P.Sreekumar, and NABARD DGM Dr.Reveendra offered felicitations. NABARD DGM Dr.R.S.Reddy welcomed the delegates and Dr.B.Sunil, Director, Academic staff college, KVASU, expressed vote of thanks.
The theme of the workshop was ‘Impact of climate change in livestock based livelihood systems’.Dr.Sudarshan S. of NABARD Consultancy services, Sri.Sushilkumar, NABARD and Scientists from KVASU, Dr.K.P.Sreekumar, Dr.A.P.Usha, Dr.A.K.Beena, Dr.Syam Mohan, Dr.DeepaAnanth, Dr.A Prasad, presented papers.NABARD DMD Sri.Amalorpavanathan addressed the delegates. 30 senior y officers of NABARD are attending the workshop and Annual Business Meet which will conclude on 26th April 2017.
