28Second batch of experiential training programme on ‘Prophylactic hoof care in farm animals’ was conducted at the Department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology,CVAS, Mannuthy from 19th and 20th May 2017 organised by the Directorate of Clinics, Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences. Eight participants, Department of Animal Husbandry, Andhrapradesh (1), Kerala Livestock Development Board (3), Department of Animal Husbandry, Kerala (2) and Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (2) attended the training programme. The participants acquired basic skills on hoof trimming, anaesthasia and regional intravenous analgesia, treatment of hoof lesions and application of hoof blocks. Interactive hands-on sessions were conducted at Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex, University Livestock Farm and University Goat Farm, Mannuthy. The sessions were concluded with the valedictory function on 20th May 2017 at the Conference Hall of Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine, presided by Dr. C.B. Devanand, Professor and Head, Dept of. Surgery. In the presidential address it was suggested that hoof trimming skills have to be acquired by the young veterinarians for opening the entrepreneurial avenues and for the benefits of farming community. Dr. Sisilamma George, Dean, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy in her address appreciated the Department of Surgery and Radiology for conducting such trainings which are very valuable to help the farming community. She has suggested the participants to act as ambassadors of KVASU for further propagation of the training experiences. The certificates were distributed by the Dean in the function. Dr. Laiju M Philip, Assistant Professor and Course Director welcomed the gathering and Dr. Soumya Ramankutty, Assistant Professor, Department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology proposed vote of thanks. In the feedback session participants shared the utility of hands on experience on hoof trimming in real farm situation. They opinioned that the demonstration of anaesthetic techniques for the procedures has improved their confidence level for performing hoof trimming in field situations.
