22' Food security should be achieved only through Food justice', Says Sri. P. Sainath, Rural Affairs Editor of The Hindu Daily while delivering a talk on Sustainable Agriculture-Issues and Challenges in the Seminar Hall of College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences of Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Mannuthy Campus on 22nd February 2012. It was organised by the Students Union of CVAS, Mannuthy with the help of Directorate of Entrepreneurship of KVASU. Dean in Charge, CVAS, Mannuthy Dr. Philomina welcomed the gathering. Dr.T.P.Sethumadhavan of Directorate of Entrepreneurship introduced the Guest. Dr.K.C.Raghavan, Director, Centre for Advanced Studies in Animal Genetics and Breeding offered felicitations. Students Union President Miss Aneesha Mohammed expressed vote of thanks.
Sainath claimed that Poor quality of water and soil coupled with adverse climatic conditions, indescriminate use of Chemicals and pesticides are the major challenges faced by Indian Agriculture. In order to augment production appropriate technologies must be used in Agriculture and allied sectors.Unscientific shift from food crops to Cash crops led to Farmer suicides in the country. Vidarbha farmers are unable to rear cross bred cows. They consider it as a burden. Organic farming in the country is in the hands of corporates.Certification is one of the major hurdles.Sainath lauded the Vechur conservation project of the University. Earlier Sri. Sainath visited the Vechur Conservation Unit. Director, Centre for Advance Studies in Animal Genetics and Breeding Dr.K. C.Ragjhavan, Professor in Charge of the Vechur Unit Dr.T.V.Aravindakshan, Professor Farms Dr.Francis Xavier, Dr.T.P.Sethumadhavan, Miss Aneesha Mohammed, Sinu Varghese and Students Union representatives accompanied Sainath During his Vechur Unit visit.
