29Two day National workshop on “Revamping Education and Research in Dairy Processing to meet global challenges” organised by College of Dairy Science and Technology of Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University was held at Hotel Ashoka Inn, Thrissur from 27th to 28th September 2012. Dr. B.Ashok IAS, Vice Chancellor, Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University inaugurated the workshop and delivered Dr.Varghese Kurien memorial lecture on 27th September 2012. In the inaugural address Vice Chancellor Dr.B.Ashok mentioned that increase in cost of milk production is the major challenge faced by dairy farmers in the state. For every one Rupee increase in cost of cattle feed, milk price has to be increased at rate of Rs1.70 per litre. Farmers associations must be given the privilege to fix the price of milk. Milk price has to be revised based on milk- feed price index. Breeding requires more attention to improve productivity of cattle.
During Dr.Varghese Kurien memorial lecture, Vice Chancellor described him as an icon of co-operative movement and dairy industry. Dr.Kurien worked for farmers in the non profit sector and made dairying a highly competitive industry using modern technologies, management principles and marketing tools. He engineered the White revolution and made India the largest milk producer of the world. Dr.Kurien’s greatest contribution was to give a position of pre-eminence to the farmers interests rather than those of middlemen,Moreover he has made enormous contributions to the fields of agriculture, rural development and dairying. Vice Chancellor added.
