29 Five day International workshop on Production animal health and welfare was held at College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences of Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University campus, Pookode from 24th to 28th September 2012. This workshop was organised as a part of its faculty development programme by Kerala Veterinary & Animal Sciences University in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh funded by Knowledge - Economy Partnership grant from the British Council. Professor Natalie Waran (Ph.D.), Director of Jeanne Marching International Centre for Animal Welfare Education at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary studies of University of Edinburgh and Dr. Neil Sargison, Ph.D & Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and the Senior lecturer from Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary studies led the sessions on problem-based learning in on-farm practical situations. 18 faculty members from KVASU participated in the workshop.
Vice chancellor KVASU Dr.B.Ashok IAS inaugurated the valedictory session of the workshop on 28th September 2012. In the inaugural address, Vice Chancellor announced that KVASU is seriously pursuing collaborations with University of Edinburgh, UK in the areas of academics, research and extension. Taking in to account the increasing need of advanced knowledge for Veterinarians, KVASU and Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary studies of University of Edinburgh will jointly offer online distance learning programmes in Animal welfare as part of continuous professional development. In the changing context KVASU will act as a facilitator for implementing problem based learning in the country. As part of the same, with the help of Veterinary Council of India, University will take a lead role in organising an International Workshop during 2013 for the Vice chancellors of the Veterinary universities in the country. As part of exchange programme, faculty members of KVASU can visit Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary studies of University of Edinburgh to get an exposure on problem based learning and research activities of University of Edinburgh. Moreover farms of KVASU, Pookode campus will be developed as one of the model farms with animal welfare standards. This will be one of the first attempts in the country. Professor Natalie Waran (Ph.D.), Director of Jeanne Marching International Centre for Animal Welfare Education at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary studies of University of Edinburgh offered all helps from University of Edinburgh in this regard. Vice Chancellor added.
Professor Natalie Waran, Project co-ordinator agreed to assist KVASU in the area of Animal welfare research for refining the knowledge on Animal welfare. Dr. Neil Sargison, Veterinary Parasitologist of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons suggested that field oriented research works need more emphasis in the country.
