25KVASU’s outreach programme launched
Livestock farmers in the state will get financial assistance and privileges similar to Agriculture Sector; Says Hon’ble Minister for Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, Government of Kerala Sri. K.P.Mohanan. Minister made this statement during the inauguration of the Farmer outreach programme of Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University and Financial Literacy Centre at Kuttikkad Farmers service Co-operative Bank Hall, Kuttikkad, Thrissur District on 22nd February 2013. Livestock sector is expected to get more budget allocation in the forthcoming Budget. Minister lauded the efforts of University in bringing the technology to the doorsteps of the farmers.
Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University is implementing an outreach programme with the support from NABARD which is aimed at livelihood and food security among women self help group members. KVASU’s outreach programme is a unique initiative aimed at augmenting livestock production in the state. Directorate of Entrepreneurship of the University is implementing this programme with the support from NABARD and Kuttikkad Farmers service Co-operative bank. As part of the project initially backyard poultry production will be popularized among women Self help groups. Gramasree layers will be distributed for this purpose. Day old chicks will be procured from University poultry farm and will be reared in the egger nurseries of Animal husbandry department. Pullets of 45-60 days old will be distributed with the financial assistance from NABARD. KVASU will provide technical assistance to the Self help groups. Bank and KVASU will jointly organize stakeholder based extension programme for this project. This unique model will be popularized in other parts of the state.

Shijy Bose (President, Pariyaram Grama Panchayat) and Sri. Eugine Moreli offered felicitations. Sri. M.C.Antony master welcomed the delegates and Sri. Sony Varghese expressed vote of thanks.An awareness seminar on food security through Poultry production was held as part of the inaugural function. Dr.B.Ajith Babu, Academic Consultant, Centre for Advanced Studies in Poultry Science, KVASU, Mannuthy took classes on networking Back yard poultry production through women SHGs.
