19Zoonoses day was celebrated on 16-07-2013 by the Department of Veterinary Public Health, Preventive Medicine and Epidemiology and Veterinary Parasitology of College of Veterinary and animal Sciences University, Mannuthy.The theme of the day’s function was “Mosquito Control”. The Mosquito Control Program was officially inaugurated by a fogging operation in the front of the main College Office block by the Deputy Mayor of Thrissur Corporation, Adv. Subi Babu and Dr. P. C. Saseendran, Dean, CVAS, Mannuthy presided over the function. Dr. K Devada inaugurated the Seminar. Sri. Gireesh kumar, Thrissur Corporation Standing Committee Chairman (Health), Smt, Jayasree Bhaskaran, Councillor, and Dr. A. P. Usha offered felicitations.. Dr.Treesamol welcomed the delegates and Dr. C. Latha expressed vote of thanks.
A poster competition for the students was also conducted. Aiswarya Lekshmanan and Thajunnisa A. S. bagged the 1st prize and 2nd prize by Anagha S and team, while the 3rd prize was bagged by Sharon A. J.Study on the present scenario of various mosquito species in and around the campus in the month of June, 2013 was also conducted. Two students, Sonu S. Nair (2010) and Arya Anil (2009) presented the findings of the study. A talk on “Mosquito borne diseases and Control” by Dr. Sujith Joseph Banglaw, Assistant Surgeon, Community Health Centre, Vellanikkara for the students and labourers was also part if the programme.Sttudents of IIIrd year and IVth year were completely involved in the clean- up activity. The student group together with the farm labourers was divided into fifteen groups, which were supervised by faculty members and P. G. Students of the concerned three departments. These groups were allotted to fifteen different sites in and around the campus including the farms, hostels and residential areas.
Following recommendations in light of the day’s programme was put forward:
1. A coordinated effort to be initiated by the whole body of students and employees to keep the campus clean and plastic free.
2. To observe a dry day in a week.
3. Waste materials were to be collected, segregated, sorted and disposed off appropriately, once in a
Fortnight, especially in the campus and residential areas.
4. As the Corporation has facilities for the disposal of plastic wastes, the plastic waste shall be segregated from the campus and disposed off. In due course, the campus can be made plastic free
5. More number of labourers are to be engaged regularly for campus cleaning on a daily basis.
