07Veterinary Council of India (VCI) is seriously trying to put minimum standards for Veterinary practice in the country, says Vice Chancellor of Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University and member of Veterinary Council of India, Dr. B. Ashok IAS. The country requires around 40000 Veterinary graduates to meet the emerging food security and food safety needs of the country. Veterinary council of India, the authority for regulating Veterinary education and practice in the country is planning to implement shift system in the Veterinary colleges to double the existing number of seats. In the era of globalization where developed countries are implementing superspeciality system in Veterinary Hospitals, it is high time to implement this in the country at the institutional level. Vice Chancellor made this remark during the inaugural address in the 37th Annual Congress of the Indian Society for Veterinary Surgery at Casino Cultural Auditorium, Thrissur on 6th November 2013. Dr Deepak Kumar De, Vice President of the ISVS presided over the function. Dr. S. Thilagar, Executive Secretary, ISVS, presented the report. Dr.Thilagar opined that lack of funds and non-availability facilities causes problem in implementing superspeciality surgical units in Veterinary hospitals in the country. Director of Academics and Research Dr. M.R. Saseendranath delivered the Key Note Address. Director of Entrepreneurship Dr. S. Ramkumar released the compendium. Dr. K.P. Sreekumar, Registrar of the University, Dr. P.C. Saseendran, Dean, Veterinary College, Mannuthy, Dr. Leo Joseph, Dean, Veterinary College Pookode, Dr. R. Rajendrakumar, Dean, Dairy Science College, Mannuthy, Dr. K. Udayavarman, President, Kerala State Veterinary Council offered felicitations. Various awards of the society were distributed in the occasion. Dr. K. Rajankutty, General Convenor, welcomed the delegates and Dr. C.B. Devanand Organizing Secretary delivered the vote of thanks. Around 400 delegates are attending the National Symposium. The Symposium will discuss research findings in the area of Veterinary surgery like anesthesia, radiography and imaging techniques, small animal surgery, ruminant animal surgery, equine surgery, wild life surgery, avian surgery and orthopedic surgery. ISVS Awards and Fellowships were distributed during the inaugural session.
