20 As a part of the intensive drive to contain the FMD and prevent it by the department of Animal Husbandry Govt of Kerala and Dairy Development Department a unique effort was launched in collaboration with Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University in Wayanad on 20 December 2103 at District Veterinary Centre, Kalpetta. This was inaugurated by the Director of Entrepreneurship of the Veterinary University Professor S. Ramkumar in presence of Dr Vijaya bhanu, L, District Animal Husbandry Officer, Dr.B. Bahuleyan Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. Thara, Coordinator, Mr. M. Prakash, Assistant Director, Dairy Development Department , Mr Girish Kalpetta, President Kalpetta Milk Cooperative Society, Dr Ajithkumar Professor of Clinical Medicine , Dr Smitha Assistant Professor, Dr Vinod Assistant Professor, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Pookode.In a collaborative effort the Veterinary University located in Wayanad is working with the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairy development Department, local self government, milk societies in an effort to educate and create awareness on the concerns of farmers regarding FMD. In a proposed programme they are taking up a mass vaccination programme in Kalpetta municipality and Vengappally Gram Panchayat with the veterinary students of Pookode Veterinary College assisting the doctors of the Animal Husbandry department in the mass campaign programme on 20 December 2013. Dr. Ajith kumar Professor Clinical Medicine is leading the Faculty and students from the College. In another programme the students and faculty of the University is to work with Animal Husbandry department, Dairy development department and milk cooperative societies in creating awareness through FMD campaigns which is scheduled to take off by the 1st week of January, 2014.
It is expected that around 700 animals in 300 households will be vaccinated and benefit from this s effort. The Milk cooperative society and local self government are also actively participating t in this drive against FMD.
