25 Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University organised an Academia-industry interface on Toxicologic Pathology and Seminar on ‘Neoplastic findings in Toxicologic pathology at Hotel Das Continental, Thrissur on 22nd March 2014. During the inaugural session of the workshop Vice Chancelor KVASU Dr.B.Ashok IAS anounced the launching of the new course.Job-prospects of adequately trained experimental and toxicologic pathologists capable of working on international settings are expanding in India. Moreover the academia is yet to develop teaching/training programs to meet these demands from industry. In order to meet the demand, Department of Veterinary Pathology of CVAS, Mannuthy of KVASU is planning to develop educational and training courses covering all aspects of Experimental and Toxicologic Pathology and to offer a Post graduate Diploma course in Experimental and Toxicologic Pathology for medical and veterinary graduates. It will reduce the financial burden on industry for training newly recruited pathologists and will improve employability within the country and abroad.
Projected annual growth rate in pharmaceutical industry in India is around 15%. According to recent report of McKinsey & Company, by 2020 R&D sector of pharmaceutical firms and supporting contract research laboratories will witness spectacular growth. India contributes significantly for the advancement of global biomedical/biopharmaceutical research and the country is emerging as the potential destination for animal-based experimental studies and contract research. Trained manpower is needed for design of animal experiments, extraction of optimum data and interpretation of data for successful animal studies. It has now become a practice speciality in India exemplified by the set up and progress of Society of Toxicological Pathologists of India (STPI).
KVASU is planning to seek active support from National institutions, academic and industrial experts, Toxicologic Pathologist accredited by international agencies and leading CRO/pharmaceutical firms in India for running the programme. Institutes like Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of medical Sciences and Technology (Trivandrum) and leading pharmaceutical/CRO firms will collaborate with this project. UK-based toxicologic pathologist Dr C Gopinath delivered lectures on ‘Neoplastic Findings in Toxicologic pathology: Points to Ponder’ and ‘Contemporary Toxicologic pathology of gastrointestinal tract.’ Director Of Academics and Research Dr.M.R.Saseendranath, Director of Entrepreneurship Dr.S.Ramkumar, Dr T.V. .Anilkumar, Dr.N.Vijayan, experts from the industry and Dr.N. Divakaran Nair spoke on the occation.
