04The students and staff members of College of Dairy Science and Technology, Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Mannuthy campus paid homage before the everlasting memories of India’s Milkman, Dr. Verghese Kurien. Honoured as the architect of India's White Revolution, which catapulted India to be the world's largest milk producer, he was instrumental in laying the foundation of democratic enterprises at the remote villages and far-flung hamlets which ensured economic justice to all. Dr. Kurien managed the feat in the 1970’s at a time when it faced grim uncertainties over its food security.
As a tribute to this legendary personality who left for his heavenly abode on 9th of September 2012, the College of Dairy Science and Technology, Mannuthy in association with the Directorate of Entrepreneurship – KVASU organized a function to commemorate him on 4th of September, 2014 at the Seminar Hall, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy. The function started by 9:00 a.m. with an Elocution competition for the U.G. students of Professional Colleges in the state. The competition came to an end by 10:30 a.m. which was followed by the official function. Dr. A.K. Beena, Assoc. Professor and Officer (i/c) – Academics, CDST welcomed the gathering and Professor (Dr.) P.I. Geevarghese, Dean - CDST presided over the function. He in his presidential address stressed Dr. Kurien’s laudable contributions to the nation’s dairy sector. The function was inaugurated by Smt. Anacy Shaji, a progressive dairy farmer who bagged the Best Young Dairy Entrepreneur Award in the year 2013-14 instituted by the Govt. of Kerala. Prof. (Dr.) P. C. Saseendran – Dean, CVAS Mannuthy, Prof. (Dr.) R. Rajendra Kumar, Former Dean CDST, Prof. (Dr.) P. Sudheer Babu, Head – KVASU Dairy Plant and Sri. Sasikumar Palliyil – President, CDSTPTA offered felicitations in the programme. The main highlight of the programme was Dr. Verghese Kurien Commemorative Lecture by Prof. (Dr.) J. Prameela Devi, Member – Kerala Women’s Commission and the Malayalam translator of Dr. Verghese Kurien’s autobiography, I too had a Dream. The certificates and cash prizes for the winners of Elocution competition were distributed by the Dean, CVAS Mannuthy. Prof. (Dr.) S.N. Rajakumar - Head, Dept. of Dairy Technology proposed vote of thanks and the official function came to an end by 12:30 p.m. with the national anthem.A critical Review of the movie, ‘Manthan’ by Sri. I. Shanmughadas, the renowned film critic was also arranged at the venue during the afternoon session. The movie was about the milk co-operative movement in India based on the story written jointly by Dr. Verghese Kurien and the Film Director, Shyam Benegal.
