21 Alumni day celebrations of College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy of Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University and National seminar on Dairying were held at Golden Jubilee Hall, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy, Thrissur on 19th August 2011. Hon.Minister for Animal Husbandry, Govt of Kerala Sri. K.P.Mohanan inaugurated the function. Minister emphasised the importance of boosting milk production for ensuring food security. Minister called for the promoting cattle rearing to increase the milk production and promised Government back up for all such initiatives.Sri.M.P.Vincent MLA launched the student aid fund mobilization and released the Ksheeradhara Directory. Dr.B.Ashok, IAS Vice Chancellor, Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University delivered the key note address. Dr.K.Udayavarman, President of the Alumni Association and KSVC presided of the function.Dr.C.B.Manomohan, Registrar, KVASU, Dr.K.R.Arunkumar(President,IVA) and Dr.Ani.S.Das(MD,KLDB) offered felicitations.National seminar on strategies to improve milk production in Kerala was held as part of the Veterinary College Alumni meet. Dr.C.P.Gopakumar, Dr.Stephan Mathew, Mr.A.L.Joby, Dr.George Kunju, Dr. Sajeev kumar and Dr.K.K. Prakash presented papers. Dr. N.R.Unnithan, Former MD, KLDB was the moderator.Dr.N.Vijayan welcomed the gathering and Dr.Yohannan expressed vote of thanks.
The seminar came out with the following recommendations:
1.A data bank on production and reproductive performance of dairy cattle to be developed by Kerala Veterinary & Animal Sciences University in collaboration with Animal Husbandry Department and Kerala Livestock Development Board based on which future breeding policy should be formulated
2. Develop high tech feeds with recent feed technologies like development of Sweet Haylage to convert waste leaves ,fodder and grass to substitute green forage and also introduce lick block technology to dispense essential nutrients without losses.
3. The new generation feeds like milk replacer calf starter and milk rations fortified with essential micronutrients and probiotics are to be developed with top priority.
4.Market driven pricing of milk for better remuneration and encouragement of the livestock entrepreneurs
5. Subsidise feeds to encourage farmers
