06Taking in to account the sustainability and prospects of dairy sector in the State, Government is planning to implement farmer friendly schemes in this sector to increase the domestic milk production. Says Sri. K.C.Joseph, Hon’ble Minister for Dairying, Government of Kerala. Minister made this statement while inaugurating the Kasargod district Ksheerakarshaka Sangamam-2014 and the seminar on sustainable Dairy farming at Palavayal, Kasargod district on 6th December 2014. During the last three years milk price increase was Rs 13 against the consumer’s protest. Government is committed to protect the interest of the Dairy farmers in the State to make this system viable. Moreover Government is trying to increase the Dairy farmer’s pension benefit. Minister added. Sri. K.Kunhiraman MLA presided over the function. MRCMPU Chairman Sri.Narendran Nair, Deputy Director, Dairy Development Smt. Sobhana, Joint Director Sri. Simon Christie was among some of the dignitaries who spoke on the occasion.
Directorate of Entrepreneurship of Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University along with Dairy Development Department organised the Seminar on Sustainable Dairy Farming. Director of Entrepreneurship Dr.T.P.Sethumadhavan presented the topic on Sustainable Dairying-Challenges and Practices for scientific feeding and Management. Feeding and management are the major domains responsible for making dairying a viable preposition. Practices related to these aspects are under the control of farmers. So farmers need scientific orientation and knowledge dissemination on scientific farming practices to increase the productivity. One litre increase in milk productivity per animal will contribute a daily increase of five lakh litres of milk to the State pool. While the State is planning for fully conversion in to Organic farming, this sector assumes more significance told Dr.T.P.Sethumadhavan during his talk. Smt.Jeena Krishnan, Quality Control officer, Kasargod presented a paper on Milk Quality and food safety and Standards act. Minister distributed awards to the best Dairy farmers of the district. 1500 Dairy farmers from across the district participated in the two day event.
