11 A one day stakeholder workshop under the leadership of Directorate of Entrepreneurship and COHEART of Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University was held at Pookode Veterinary College on 11.02.15 on “Development of strategies for control of Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD, Monkey fever) in Wayanad”. Dignitaries from all allied Departments like health, Ayurveda, Homeo, Animal Husbandry and Forest Departments participated in the workshop. The main objective of the workshop was to formulate appropriate guidelines to be followed in the wake of KFD outbreak in the district. Dr. T.P. Sethumadhavan, Director of Entrepreneurship, KVASU inaugurated the workshop and emphasized the need for a structured awareness programme, guideline and action plan to control the disease. Dr. K. Vijayakumar, Dean CVAS Pookode presided over the function. Dr. Neetha Vijayan, DMO, Wayanad District offered felicitations. Dr. Reghu Joint Director National Communicable Disease Centre, Calicut delivered a lecture on tick control strategies. Dr.Jeram, Professor, Community Medicime, Wayanad Institute of Medical Sciences, Dr.Prejith, Officer in charge of COHEART presented papers on overview of KFD and its Public Health importance.Dr. Prejith, Officer in charge of COHEART welcomed the delegates and Dr. Vinod.V.K. Asst Professor, Veterinary Public Health expressed vote of thanks.
It has been decided to print and distribute leaflets in affected Grama panchayats and to distribute personnel protection cloths and lotion to those who are residing near forest lands. Moreover it has been decided to provide fly repellant lotions to domestic animals. Around 50 doctors, veterinarians, scientists and Forest range Officers participated in the workshop.
