07Speaker of Kerala Legislative Assembly G. Karthikeyan(66) who had been admitted to HCG Cancer Centre Bengaluru for the treatment of hepato cellular cancer (liver cancer) passed away on Saturday morning at 10.35 a.m.He was suffering from liver cancer and chronic liver disease. He came for specialised treatment to the city and was under the care of a multi-disciplinary team of experts headed by Sridhar P.S., consultant, Radiation Oncology at HCG.According to a statement by the hospital, his liver function had deteriorated for which he was on advanced liver support system and showed some improvement. However, his condition deteriorated due to multi-organ failure on Friday night and despite best efforts by the medical team at HCG, he could not be saved. He breathed his last around 10.35 am on Saturday.The state government has announced mourning for a week over the Speaker's demise. Government has also declared a half-day holiday for all government offices and educational institutions in the state on Saturday.
The body of Karthikeyan will be brought to Thiruvananthapuram by evening and will be kept at Speaker's official residence Neethi in the Assembly complex. On Sunday, the body will be kept at the Assembly Hall, Darbar Hall and KPCC office for the public to pay their respects. The body will be taken to Aryanadu, his constituency, by 12 pm and will be returned to his home at Sasthamangalam by 3.30 pm. His wife, Dr M.T. Sulekha (Director, IGNOU Distance Education Department) and sons, Ananthapadmanabhan (an engineer in Jakarta) and Sabareenadh (Manager, HR; Tata, Mumbai), were at the hospital when the end came.
Born on January 20, 1949, as the son of N.P. Gopala Pillai and Vanajakshiamma, he got involved with the KSU during his student days.He graduated in Commerce and then went on to become a lawyer. He held various positions and was MLA six times and gained entry into the Assembly for the first time in 1982 from Thiruvananthapuram North. He became minister twice in 1995 and 2001 and also had a stint as party chief whip.
