01The Extension training Programmer for the 2011 batch B. Tech (Dairy Science and Technology) students of the College of Dairy Science and Technology, Mannuthy held at Wayanad from the 20thApril 2015 at Wayanad. This is a part of the Experiential and hands on training programme as per the syllabus of the B. Tech course for the final year students. The seven days training was organized with the support from Dairy Development Department, Wayanad.
Sri. P.T. Gopalakurup, e Chairman of Kerala Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (MILMA) inaugurated the programme at Sulthan Bathery Milk Supply Cooperative Society. Dr. G. Girish Varma, Dean, College of Dairy Science and Technology presided over the meeting. Sri A P Kuriakose, President, Milk Societies Association Sri. Baby Varghese, Director, Sultan Bathery Milk Supply Cooperative Society, Sri. M. Prakash, Principal, Dairy Training Centre, Kozhikkode and Sri. Varkey George, Quality Control Officer, Dairy Development Department felicitated the occasion. Sri. Jose Immanuel, Deputy Director of Dairy Development, Wayanad welcomed the gathering and Sri. M. P. Sudheesh, Dairy Extension Officer, Sulthan Bathery block expressed the vote of thanks.
Students interacted with the MIlma Chairman and were divided into groups and conducted a survey among the Dairy farmers of the Society. Data was collected, analyzed and presented at KVASU, Pookode in which Director of Entrepreneurship of KVASU Dr. T.P. Sethumadhavan attended .
From 21.4.2015, the students activity includes visit to Primary Dairy Co-operatives, study of their activities and diversification, interaction with JLG, visit to Dairy Plants and Cattle Feed Plants, Fodder Farms, Dairy farms of Progressive farmers, organization of camps and seminars, Dairy Extension Service Unit, milk product manufacturing etc. They visited Thariode APCOS (Joint Liability Groups), Ambalavayal APCOS (AMCO Cattle Feed Plant), Kunnempetta APCOS (Mini Pasteurisation Plant), Deepthigiri APCOS (Farm Fresh milk manufacture and marketing) and the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Pookode. They made a milk route sample collection and testing from 4 am to 12 noon from the farmer’s barn till the processing plant to understand the quality changes in milk at different stages of its transit and importance of hygiene and maintenance of cold chain.
The students actively participated in the Infertility camp and Seminar conducted under the auspices of the Dairy Department and Ambalavayal Milk Society. They took classes for the dairy farmers on ‘Quality Milk Production’ as part of the Quality Awareness Programme (QAP), a dairy advisory programme of Dairy Department at Panamkolly Milk Society. They were exposed to new developments in the field of dairying like hydroponic fodder, dairy software used in milk co-operatives, Automatic Milk Collection Units etc.
They also visited the Radio ’Mattoli’ – community radio of Wayanad, Brahmagiri Meat Plant (MALABAR MEAT), National Informatics Centre, Tribal colony and a number of commercial dairy farms. Orientation classes about the activities of Dairy Extension Service Units were given at Mananthavady DESU by the officer Smt. Ajithambika.
Deputy Director of Wayanad and the Principal of the Dairy Training Centre, Kozhikkode monitored the programme. The students expressed that the training created a new vision towards extension activities. A product manufacturing class was also held. Valedictory function was also held on 27th April 2015. Smt. K.T. Sarojini, Director, Dairy Development Department; Sri. K.T. Thomas, Managing Director, MRCMPU (MILMA); Dr. G. Girish Varma, Dean, CDST; Dr. P.I. Geevarghese, Professor and Dr. P.Sudheer Babu, Head, KVASU Dairy Plant attended the valedictory function. Sri. Shyam Suraj S.R., Assistant Professor (Dairy Extension) was the co-coordinator of the training programme.
