02 KVASU condoles the sad demise of Dr.P.G.Nair, Former Dean, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy who died on 1st May 2015.Born in 1926, at Quilon (Kollam), as the eldest son of the late Dr. N.P. Panikkar, leading Medical Practitioner, Dr. Padmanabha Gopinathan Nair had his Under Graduate education at Madras Christian College (1941-’45) and Madras Veterinary College (1945-’50). He had his Post Graduate Education on Ohio State University, U.S.A., where he financed his studies by working as a part time Research Assistant in the laboratories where he was doing his degree programme. After his doctorate at OSU, in 1956, he had a full time faculty position at Michigan State University, which he resigned and returned to India early in 1957, due to family reasons.
From 1957 to 1961, he worked at the Indian Veterinary Research Institute as an Asst. Research Officer, and moved to the National Dairy Research Institute as Associate Professor. In 1965, he was appointed as Professor and Head, Division of Dairy Husbandry, and Principal, Dairy Science College, in 1971. During 1972, Dr. Nair visited several advanced countries (mainly USA) on a UNDP fellowship, and studied the working of modern Universities and Research Institutions in his own field of specialization.
In 1975, Dr. P.G. Nair was invited to join as Dean, College of Veterinary Science at Kerala Agricultural University, a position on which Dr. Nair could bring about many changes. On the expiry of his five-year contract, Dr. Nair was called back by ICAR, and was appointed as the Head of the Southern Regional Station, NDRI. During this period, in 1981, the Australian Veterinary Association invited Dr. Nair for a Lecture Tour.
In 1985, Dr. Nair was appointed as the Director of the newly established National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (N.B.A.G.R). Karnal. However, he reached the age of superannuation in 1986 July, and retired on 31st July 1986.
After his retirement, Dr. Nair has been Emeritus Scientist at Veterinary College Mannuthy for the maximum permissible period of five years. Subsequently, he also served as Consultant, for the National Dairy Development Board, Anand, Gujarat. In 2002, he was appointed for a five-year term as Member Research Advisory Committee, N.B.A.G.R., Karnal, which he resigned after a year due to ill health. He came to settle down in Thrissur during late in 1987, since then he had been here actively involved in all activities of the Veterinary College. He is survived by his wife Kaveri, daughter Radha and son in law Anilkumar.
