Dr.P.I.Geevarghese retired from service
Dr. P.I.Geevarghese, Professor & Head, CDST, Mannuthy retired from service due to super annuation.
Dr.P.I.Geevarghese born to Sri. Issac and Smt. Mariamma on 24 th June 1955 (10 th Midhunam 1930 ME) at Mannoor in Ernakualm Dt. He possess the reputation as a devoted teacher, an efficient extension worker and perspicacious institution builder He did his schooling at St.Thomas HS ,Keezillam and Pre degree from Nirmala College Muvattupuzha. He joined for Bachelors in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry at CVAS Mannuthy during 1973 and M.V.Sc in Dairy Science in 1977 and completed these programmes in 1977 and 1979 respectively. He possess Ph.D in Dairy Science and Diploma in Management from IGNOU.
His carrier started as Veterinary Surgeon in the Animal Husbandry department and worked at Komeri goat Farm, VH Cheruvancherry and Iritty. He joined at KAU as JAP in 1979 and worked in the Department of Dairy Science and University Livestock farm. In 1981 he was selected as Asst. Professor and in this capacity worked at LRS, Thiruvazhamkunnu and DSC Department .He headed the University Dairy Plant from 2006 to 2010. On transfer to CVAS Pokkode he worked as Professor and Head of the Departments of Livestock Products Technology and Dairy Science during the period from 2010 to 2011 During the tenure he also officiated as Associate Dean of the College for five months. Upon coming over to Mannuthy campus in 2011 he served as Professor and Head of the Departments of Dairy Chemistry, Dairy Extension, Livestock products Technology and Meat Technology Unit. He also served as Associate Dean and Dean of Dairy Science College and presently retiring as Professor and Head of Dairy Chemistry and Dairy Extension.
He was major advisor /advisory committee member of twenty M.V.SC/ M.Tech/ Ph.D students and published more than fifty research papers in journals or conference proceedings. His major research contributions were the development of a new model for the determination of Total solids in milk named as 'Gems model' which is considered to be better than the existing ones, development of the technology for Kera Ice cream and recommendations submitted to the Government on the pricing policy of milk
He is a member of many professional associations and took spearhead leadership in the establishment of the AFST (I) Thrissur Chapter and IDA Kerala chapter both are very vibrant professional Associations functioning in the College. He has attended 11 training programme, 45 national and international conferences, formulated eight external aided projects as principal investigator and organised 30 training programmes. More than 100 Popular articles, 20 ratio talks , 6 presentations in visual media, nine practical manuals and five books /monographs are in his credit. He has attended more than 500 farmers’ seminar / training classes and presented topics on various aspects of dairy husbandry/ milk production/ quality control/ product preparation etc.
He was an elected Member, Academic Council, Kerala Agricultural University), Member Academic Council and Research council, KVASU, Resource person for MILMA training centers, Extension Training Center (Govt. of Kerala) Livestock Training centers (AH Dept.),Dairy Training Centers, District Industries Centres and various NGO’s, Member of the Institutional Animal Ethics Committee of several institutions.
The organisational capacity of Dr.Geevarghese is praiseworthy as evidenced by the
the organization of Farmers Day, National and World Milk Day , World Food day on several occasions, Officer in charge of the Self financing Dairy Diploma programme for three batches, Secretary, PTA, COVAS, Mannuthy, CDST Mannuthy and Pookode, Organizing Secretary for the commemoration of Dr. Verghese Kurian,Organizing Secretary of the National workshop on Revamping Dairy education, Organizing Secretary- foundation stone laying ceremony of VKIDFT, General convener of the Job Fair organized by the KVASU, Founder organizing Secretary of the Association of Food Scientists and Technologists (India) Thrissur Chapter and President for four terms, Chairman, Indian Dairy Association (Kerala Chapter ) for two terms, National Vice president of AFST (I) for two terms. General Convener, All India Dog show and Cattle show, COVAS, Mannuthy, Vice President of the Faculty Club, Mannuthy,Co- ordinator, Students counseling Centre, COVAS Mannuthy and Pookode ,Convener of the Placement cell of the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy, Professor RC, CDST, Mannuthy.
He is also a recipient of many awards and honours and to name a few are
· Award of Excellence in Dairy Science and Technology (2002)
· Dr. P.G.Nair endowment award for the best teacher (2004)
· New product concept award-2008 Instituted by the AFST (I) 6 th IFCON held at Mysore
· Second Best training organizer award- KAU 2008-09
· Recipient of Fellow National Academy of Dairy Sciences
His wife Dr. Lila Mathew- a Pomologist by profession is working as Professor at Kerala Agricultural University and holding charge of the Controller of Examinations. They are blessed with a son Emil and a daughter Ann. Emil is working as Technical Manager at LA, USA and wife Nimmi who is a software Engineer. They are blessed with a son Jonah aged three years. Ann is currently working as Consultant with National Health Services, Govt. of UK at Cambridge. Anns Husband Er.Prasanth is working as Senior Sustainability Engineer at Oxford.
